Holiday Cheer at the Springfield Airport

Dec 02 2022

A colorful art exhibit and holiday music await holiday travelers at the Springfield airport this month.

“Abstract Actually” is the title of the newest art exhibit at the airport’s Sky Gallery. It features large abstract works of bold shapes and colors. The largest is 6.5 feet tall by 4 feet wide. The Sky Gallery is located in the lobby of the airport’s airline terminal and is open 24-hours a day.

Art exhibits rotate quarterly and consist of works by artists from the Springfield Regional Arts Council’s member registry, students and faculty of local colleges, public schools, and occasionally national organizations.

The Arts Council and the airport established the Sky Gallery in 2010. The partnership includes not only the Sky Gallery, but also the council’s annual awards banquet which is held in the terminal lobby.

Musical Cheer

2022 will be the ninth year for airport holiday performances by members of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. This season’s performances are in the terminal lobby December 9, 16, and 23, from noon to 1:00 p.m.

The airport promotes and supports the local arts because a vibrant arts scene is vital to Springfield’s quality of life and sense of place. The airport is the community’s front door — it’s the first impression visitors have when they step off the plane. Having the arts front and center at the airport puts our best self forward.
