Jun 24 2013 Painting the Summer Away BY sgf-admin TAGS

Many of us have summer projects involving paint. Paint the house. Paint the kitchen. The deck. The bathroom. The kid's room. The runway ...

Yes, every summer we paint the runways. No nice mauve or baby blue — we go strictly by the book: black, yellow, white. And we don't stop with the runways — we do the taxiways, the tarmacs, and any other piece of pavement that requires it.

Our 2012 passenger numbers are in along with those from competing airports. We've double and triple checked our math and the news is good: our passenger numbers were up in 2012 — the upward movement bucks national and regional trends.

Total passenger numbers were up 2.8%. Things weren't so hot at competing airports: Tulsa was down 2%. Kansas City was down 4%. St. Louis was up 1.1%. Northwest Arkansas was up .60%.

"What was that loud airplane we heard last night about ten o'clock?"

Sometimes people ask it like a question; other times it's an accusation...

Allegiant began service here in April 2005 with low fare flights to Las Vegas. Flights to Orlando, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Phoenix, and Los Angeles followed.

This is good news. Keep in mind that last year we were down 8.1%. Why such an improvement? Several factors are at work…

For the seventh consecutive year our airport has received a “discrepancy free” safety inspection from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Airports that have scheduled airline service are inspected every year by the FAA for compliance with federal aviation safety rules.

Just one discrepancy free inspection is an accomplishment in itself, but to do it seven years in a row is a tremendous achievement. It shows that safety is part of everything we do.

The nation's airlines begin reporting their first quarter profits today. Good news is not expected. The price of fuel is the killer -- up approximately 30% since this time last year.

While the news looks gloomy for the airlines, things are bright and sunny here in Springfield. Our airport finished the quarter with a 10% increase in total passenger numbers. Here are the numbers for the first three months of the year:
