Overview:
Midfield Terminal Project

In June of 2006 the airport broke ground for a new terminal. Located on the west side of the airport, the new facility will open in early 2009.
Besides offering the obvious benefits of a new building, the new terminal will address several major issues:
- The current terminal has run out of room to park jetliners overnight. Operationally speaking, this is a huge issue. 16 jet liners park in Springfield for the night. In the morning, they all want to leave as early as possible, but they can't because they have to take turns at the loading gates.
- The passenger capacity of the current terminal is about a million passengers a year. We expect to have that many by 2010.
- Security. The current terminal was built long before post 9/11 security requirements. Baggage screening is jury-rigged in an old airline office; the passenger screening area is crammed into its current space and more stringent security is on the way. The new terminal will be built to accommodate modern security requirements.
